Title race: Why leaders Liverpool can still be caught

As we near the business end of the season, the title race seems to come to a close as Arsenal Stumble yet again, this time against Everton.

Yes, the Toffees helped their city rivals by drawing to Arsenal at the final edition of that game to be played at Goodison, with Everton set to move to their new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium next season. An Arsenal side with Madrid in mind, changes were afoot for Mikel Arteta’s side, a possible concession of the title, admitting that the season in the Premier League is over for Arsenal. Of course, Arteta does have an opportunity to bring Arsenal a trophy they have wanted but never got, the Champions League, something that can establish Arsenal as one of the best teams in the world, but to do so, they will first have to get through a team who don’t seem to lose in the competition, Real Madrid.

Arsenal’s concession of the league is nothing new, though; in fact, it has been the story of their season. Whist injuries have kept key players out, a stubbornness from the top or further down has meant that investment for Arsenal has been focused on the defence and not the attack, something they paid for down the line. Bringing in Raheem Sterling as their sole attacking sign was a useless move, which has led to a lack of depth in the striker position and ultimately led to Mikel Merino, who performed well, playing as a striker.

Liverpool now needs only four wins from the remaining eight games, and for a side who has only lost one in the league and drawn only 7, it seems very doable. Every time you feel Liverpool are going to slip, they somehow don’t, and even if they do, Arsenal seem to struggle to capitalise.

So, is the title race over? Well, as a Liverpool fan, I try not to say Liverpool going to win the league because so often they have lost it, but Liverpool are no longer looking over their shoulder at a well-oiled Man City machine; they are looking over at a stunting Arsenal side, so I think that Liverpool will manage to grab a second Premier League, and finally catch Man United, as United did to Liverpool all those years ago.
